Tete Jumeau Dolls
Tete Jumeau Dolls were the most heavily produced, and therefore most easy to find, of all the antique Jumeau dolls. Production of these dolls stretched from the mid-1880s up until the end of the 19th Century.
The back of the head of the doll will have a red stamp saying just 'Tete Jumeau' or:
Dépose
Téte Jumeau
Bte. S.G.D.G.
Underneath this should be a number. This number refers to the size of the doll.
How Tete Jumeau Dolls Were Made?
The very earliest Jumeau dolls (Poupees) were first made with paper mache. Later, Jumeau moved into making Bebe dolls which were made from pressed bisque. With increased competition from Germany, Jumeau were forced into using the cheaper pouring method to make dolls. Tete Jumeau dolls were the first dolls Jumeau made using this technique.
Tete dolls were Jumeau's attempt at mass producing dolls. Claims were made that at the hight of production they were send three million dolls out into the world each year.
As they were mass produced, the quality of Tete Jumeau dolls is not so uniform. Because of this, the price of Tete Jumeau dolls tends to vary a great deal also.
